How to make it through the last few weeks of winter and maybe even enjoy this time!
It’s almost as though Valentines Day was thrown into February just to try and provide a bit of colour to these dragging winter months. In reality though, if you’re not loved up and swept off your feet by your other half, Valentines Day can either pass us by entirely or leave us feeling a little deflated and disappointed… (don’t worry I did get a card)!
We’re in that in-between stage of winter, the festive sparkle is behind us and feels like a long time ago and spring is no where in sight. The dull skies, dark mornings and cold days can start to weigh a little heavy. It’s totally understandable to feel a little sluggish, devoid of motivation and, well, really just a bit flat. Lets face it our skin doesn’t help… its not uncommon to look in the mirror and our skin to reflect back exactly how we’re feeling… a bit ‘meh’.
The biggest piece of advice that I want you to take away from this little pep talk is this; you’re not alone, you’re not doing anything wrong and it’s perfectly normal.
Every month I take part in a little goal setting session with a fabulous group that I’m a member of and our incredibly coach brought something up that has completely shifted my perspective on these final few weeks of winter. Rather than fight against this season, she encouraged us to embrace it! Enjoy the last few weeks of dark, cosy evenings snuggled up on the sofa, treat yourself to a new candle with a warming scent, take time to do your skin care routine, relish long, hot (not too hot) baths and cook warming meals, soups and slow cooked dinners. These last few weeks of winter are the perfect time to slow down, nurture ourselves, and create little rituals that leave us feeling rested, replenished, and ready for the shift into spring.
When it comes your skin, it may not be quite as easy to make it feel good, winter really can take its toll and you could be experiencing all sorts of bizarre reactions (I, for example, currently have a forehead that feels like sandpaper). For anyone who has followed me on Instagram you’ll know how I’m really (really) against generic skin care advice. Skin care is so personal and personalised that I don’t believe it’s possible to hand out skin care advice that will suit everyone but I’ve tried to put together a very simplified routine that will certainly help to bring back a little bit of glow to your skin.
If your skin is feeling a little dull, a little dry, or just not its best, a simple yet effective routine can help bring it back to life—without overloading it with actives or stressing about achieving a “glow” every single day. Here’s how you can create a soothing winter skincare moment, paired with a little extra coziness for your mind and soul.
Please note: if you have excessive dryness similar to eczema, redness that could be rosacea or acne please see a professional to get your skin on the right track.
1. A Gentle Refresh
Start by cleansing your skin with a nourishing, non-stripping cleanser. Your skin barrier works hard in winter, so choose something creamy or hydrating that supports it rather than stripping away moisture. My favourites are Ultracalming Cleanser and Intensive Moisture Cleanser by Dermalogica.
2. Gentle Exfoliation
Winter can leave skin looking a little dull, so a mild exfoliation is the perfect way to sweep away tired skin cells and reveal a fresh, soft complexion. Look for a gentle enzyme-based exfoliant or a mild acid toner—something that polishes without irritation. I love Dermalogica’s Daily Milkfoliant or Microfoliant for this step. These are also products that you’ll use again and again and quite frankly they need their own blog post just to explain how great they are.
3. A Nourishing Mask Moment
Once your skin is fresh and prepped, it’s time to restore hydration. A rich, creamy mask packed with replenishing ingredients (think hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or soothing oat extracts) will work wonders. While your mask works its magic, make the moment extra cozy—light a candle, wrap up in a blanket, and take a few deep breaths. For this you can not beat Multivitamin Power Recovery Mask, a core homecare product that acts like a little vitamin tablet for your skin.
4. Hydrate & Seal It In
After rinsing off your mask, lock in moisture with a deeply hydrating serum followed by a rich, soothing moisturiser. This duo is perfection: B5 Hydrating Serum and Multivitamin Power Recover Cream.
5. A Cozy Finishing Touch
Your self-care doesn’t have to stop at skincare. Pour yourself a warm drink, put on your favorite movie, and fully embrace this slower season while it lasts. There’s no rush—spring will come, and so will brighter days. But for now, lean into the warmth, the coziness, and the little rituals that bring you comfort.
The Takeaway…
It’s easy to feel like we need to constantly be doing—pushing through, achieving, staying productive. But winter invites us to slow down, to rest, and to take care of ourselves in a softer, more intentional way.
So if you’re feeling a little low right now, or if your skin isn’t looking as radiant as you’d like—don’t stress. Instead, take this as an opportunity to nurture, replenish, and enjoy the little moments of comfort that this season has to offer.
